TeamBDA brought the Island together during the America’s Cup as thousands of Bermudians came to the America’s Cup Village, watched from the water or tuned in to television and radio to witness the team compete in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup.
TeamBDA did Bermuda proud. The youngest team in the fleet, having trained fulltime as a team only since January, with some of the members having not sailed before joining the team, they have become hometown heroes. Bermudians of all walks of life turned out in droves to support TeamBDA as they raced against professional sailors, waving flags, cheering loudly and blasting airhorns, a Bermuda sporting tradition.
Land Rover BAR Academy (GBR) won the regatta with 50 points followed by NZL Sailing Team with 48 points, Team Tilt (SUI) with 42 points, Artemis Youth Racing (SWE) with 37 points, Team France Jeune with 35 points, Spanish Impulse by IBEROSTAR with 34 points and SVB Team Germany with 33 points.
This is the first time Bermuda has competed in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup and the first time black sailors have sailed in the regatta.
Speaking after the races, Skipper Mackenzie Cooper said he was proud of his teammates and thanked the Island for its support.
“It was a tough last day for us, but it’s all about the big picture and what we’ve accomplished here in making the Finals and being a part of this incredible event. I think that’s what we really have to focus on – what we’ve done for Bermuda, being role models and showing that it doesn’t matter where you come from or what your background is, you can achieve things on the world stage. That’s really important to us.
“I can’t thank my team enough. What an incredible journey. It’s weird to think that for some of us it’s over, like myself, we’re aging out. But this bond is unbreakable and we will be mates for life.
Helmsman Dimitri Stevens said: “I’m just happy that we’ve had this moment and got to enjoy ourselves. We didn’t do as well as we hoped but we went out there, we made it to the Finals and we put our name out there. Hearing the people in the Grandstand just gave us an extra push to try and do better. I love to hear everyone’s horns and shouts. It was great.”
