GALLERY: WHY I LOVE MY (NATURAL) TRESSES! Featured

BISMILLAH RICHARDSON: I have been on a natural journey since I first cut all my hair off in my 3rd year at Berkeley (when short hair was seen as a "TOMBOYISH"). At first it was cut for practical reasons, I was a serious athlete and didn't have time for a lot a hair care.

I have grown and cut my hair countless times over the last 20+ years and I love the natural road. What I love most about my natural hair is the color (that I experiment with often). I wish it was bigger sometimes like my big sister Gaynelle's mane, so I am often seen puffing it out throughout the day :) I love to see all my sisters with their natural manes flaunting their individuality, textures, and tones!

SELENA TROTT: I've tried every hair style you can think of. Finally I decided to take the plunge. I set the date and sat in a chair for seven hours to form the perfect locs that I wanted. I recall asking my boyfriend at the time, now my husband.....how long is it gonna take to grow! It was about to the top of my shoulders when I started from my natural hair. Well here it is eight years later and I love it.selena trott1

One would assume it is heavy but it's not actually. I wash it in the tub or lately the kitchen sink filled with water and shampoo like I'm hand washing clothes. It's easy and low maintenance. Bethanne Thomas has been grooming it from day one. I go every few months, yup months. Locs don't like to be groomed too often and pulled in my view, so I get it interlocked with a latch hook every 2-3 months. If you want to grow locs, just know it's a journey, prepare for the journey. I don't regret it to this day.

NICOLE CURTIS: I first went natural 17 years ago when my daughter was due, doing the big chop then, so that I wouldn't have to deal with my hair and a new baby. That didn't last long though, as I ended up relaxing it again a few months after she was born.

Years later, in 2012, I did the big chop again, this time because I simply wanted healthier hair without the "creamy crack". I have been natural ever since, and love my natural hair because of the versatility of it.

During my natural journey I have cut my hair three times and have tried styles of all sorts. I can wear my natural hair curly or straight, but couldn't wear my relaxed straight hair curly. I love it, and don't see myself ever going back to relaxed hair.

CALVINA WILSON: My natural journey started over ten years ago. As a kid, having natural hair was always a bad thing. Especially when told that you didn't have pretty hair like your sister. So it wasn't until I was an adult and loved myself for who I was that I decided to embrace being natural. It was the best decision ever. Natural hair is versatile, sexy, and shows who we are as black women. Now I'm on to the locing stage of being natural. I'll love this just as much as all the natural hair styles I have rocked over the last ten plus years.
